Lean Manufacturing Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words
Lean Manufacturing - Research Paper Example In the previous decade, thorough methodologies have been utilized to wipe out inconsequential consumptions in assembling. This pattern has gotten worldwide in scale confirm by its reception in British assembling from Japanââ¬â¢s vehicle industry. The standards of lean spotlights on limiting costs actuated from excess errands while guiding the business to rehearses that increases the value of the firm. In any case, it would not be a great idea to anticipate most extreme and enduring profit by impermanent execution. These conventions are more on realizing discipline, setting gauges, improving attachment over the business, giving everybody a center ethos. It is obviously noteworthy that the framework is surely known by the senior administration who true to form must have an unmistakable objective. Lean assembling rehearses are favored in various assembling activities over conventional large scale manufacturing strategies (Doolen and Hacker 2005). Conflicts on lean practices emerged as scientists contended that these practices are not as serious and relevant to other operational situations, similar to those that organize contemplations, for example, adaptability of volume, initiative in innovation, speed in market and improvement of new items.. These specialists likewise distinguished elective practices on activity (for example techniques that continue supplemental limit in the general gracefully chain and has been seen to be beneficial). This, nonetheless, is in direct logical inconsistency with the waste decrease theory of lean practices.

Odysseus and Ulysses - Literature Essay Samples
Modern renditions of classics are notorious for misrepresenting the cherished old works they try to depict, but when they are successful they add modern twists and embellishments while still maintaining the timeless message. In O Brother, Where Art Thou? the Coen brothers honor Homerââ¬â¢s epic, the Odyssey, with an insightful adaptation. The directors artistically implant messages about honor and trust using symbolism and positioning in ways that mirror the format of the epic and create a worthwhile viewing experience for students trying to supplement their education. Odysseus remains a timeless hero in society not only because of his journeys, but also his larger than life persona and the respect he commands from everyone he meets. Ulysses adopts this mindset in his travels, refusing to be defined as a person based on the situation he is in at any given moment. The symbolism frequent in O Brother, Where Art Thou? adds depth to Ulysses by emphasizing how his care about appearances affects his experiences and decisions. After escaping from jail, Ulysses, Pete, and Delmar are hungry, tired, and have no way of getting to the treasure. Ulysses stops at a store for a car part and some hair pomade, but refuses to accept any brand other then his own, claiming, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t want Fop, goddamn it! Iââ¬â¢m a Dapper Dan man!â⬠This refusal to settle for what Ulysses views as a lesser substitute is reminiscent of Odysseusââ¬â¢ determination to reach Ithaca, though on a much more limited scale. Ulysses believes that accepting anything less t han what he wants will be a concession of weakness and will demote him to a less honorable status. Odysseus behaves the same way throughout his journey. Calypso expresses her strong desire to keep him on her island indefinitely. While Odysseus does not view this as an entirely unpleasant situation, he knows that his true wish is to finally reach Ithaca and his wife, and therefore implores Calypso to let him leave. Although honor is extremely important to both men, they are willing to admit slight defeats at the chance of a greater opportunity to redeem themselves. In a final, desperate attempt to win back Penny, Ulysses and his men dress up as a band of old men, complete with beards. Ulysses promises that heââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"just gotta get close enough to talk to her.â⬠A bedraggled old man does not match the type of appearance Ulysses traditionally likes to maintain, but he sees the chance it gives him to reunite with Penny and sacrifices the less important aspects of his natur e in order to achieve his goals. Odysseus exhibits the same ability to make sacrifices when he spends years at his home in Ithaca, enduring harsh, humiliating treatment from the suitors. Although it pained him to undergo that type of disrespect in his own home, he knew that in order to succeed in his plan he would need to bide his time until he was ready to defeat the suitors. The symbolism evident in the old man disguises represents the patience and sacrifices the men make towards a greater long-term goal. Honor is a major driving force for the adventures of these men, but they still realize when a greater cause is worth a meager sacrifice. Other sacrifices are made on such adventures when a great amount of trust is required to succeed in the goals of the group. The Coen brothers use subtle positioning throughout the film adaptation to signify who the men trust to lead them throughout their struggles. At the start of their travels, an order needs to be established to prevent conflicts. This issue is addressed quickly, when Pete asks Ulysses, ââ¬Å"Who elected you leader of this outfit?â⬠No formal leader is established at this point, but it soon becomes clear whom the men look to for guidance. Ulysses gains their trust quickly, and this is expressed not only through actions but also through the subtle ways Ulysses fulfills common leadership roles. When the men steal a car in order to seek the treasure, Ulysses is the driver. This subtle cue incorporated by the Coen brothers subconsciously places Ulysses in a leadership role. This reflects Odysseusââ¬â¢ position in relation to his crew. Both men are looked to fo r the decisions of the groups as a whole, and both use this power to help their men escape dangerous situations. Ulysses used his guidance abilities to help his men out of the burning barn at the Hogwallopââ¬â¢s when they were ââ¬Å"in a tight spot,â⬠just as Odysseus uses his wit to devise a plan to escape from Polythemusââ¬â¢ cave. Ulysseus is placed in the center again as the lead singer for the Soggy Bottom Boysââ¬â¢ hit song, ââ¬Å"Man of Constant Sorrow.â⬠He is clearly a leader in this position, and becomes the face of their fame. Odysseus mirrors this role in his tale, as well. As leader of his crew, Odysseus is the name people wonder about when they talk about how long it has been since their return. Odysseus represents many men, but is the only one remembered for their journey, just as the lead singer so often steals the spotlight from the entirety of a band. Students reading the Odyssey would do very well to supplement their reading with this modern adaptation of the Greek classic. While still possessing artistic differences and interpretations in the plot, the film does exceptionally well portraying Ulysses as a hero with inner conflict regarding whether to protect his crew or further his personal goals. Odysseus faces these crossroads frequently in the Odyssey, the classic example being the choice he faces on Circeââ¬â¢s island. Upon discovering that Circe had turned his men into pigs, Odysseus must choose to brave the possible danger that the witch brings, or to leave his men there and flee towards Ithaca. He remains loyal to his men and helps liberate them, forming a valuable connection with Circe along the way. The film adaptation excels at demonstrating this conflict of character Ulysses frequently suffers from, although Ulysses, like Odysseus, manages to come through in truly desperate times. When the men stumble upon a KKK gat hering Ulysses immediately spots Tommy, their old accompanist, lined up for a lynching. He does not hesitate in his decision when Pete whispers, ââ¬Å"We got to save him.â⬠Infiltrating a KKK meeting is a potentially life threating risk for Ulysses to undertake, but his loyalty to his companions drives him, like Odysseus, to taking that chance. The film adaptation, like the book, helps portray the lengths to which the main characters will go to where they are headed, and scenes like this, which offer character change, are crucial to the development of the story and necessary to show in class. The crew can also hinder Odysseus, which adds to the dynamic he maintains with his companions. When the crew is gifted with wind to aid them on the trip back home to Ithaca, the crew soon grows restless and mutinous and decides to investigate the bag with the wind in it. The wind comes roaring out, and their closest chance to reaching Ithaca vanishes in front of them. Ulysses experiences similar setbacks as a result of his men. After the men escape from prison they try to jump on a train for fast passage to the treasure. Two of them get up, but one trips in the attempted jump and drags all three of them off of the train. The incompetence of the crew in this situation is necessary to developing an understanding of the relationship between Ulysses and his men. A huge part of understanding the Odyssey is appreciating how much aid Odysseus receives from companions, and realizing his hesitation to trust many. Many scenes in O Brother, Where Art Thou? expand on this relationship and display it in more distinct terms than may have been offered in the Odyssey, creating an ideal work to be offered to students for enhanced learning. Homerââ¬â¢s The Odyssey remains so popular to this day in part because of its flexibility to adaptation within many different environments, as masterfully demonstrated by the Coen Brothers in O Brother, Where Art Thou? Both the positive and negative aspects of the relationships and characters developed in the film create lasting impressions about the characters that would prove more difficult to express solely through the book.

Essay on Mobile Phone Innovation
Essay on Mobile Phone Innovation Background and History Mobile phones technology is founded on the radio technology developed in the 1940, which formed the foundation for the innovations in police vehicles and cabs, where two way radios allowed two way communications. The earliest mobile phone emerge in 1946, despite the fact that it was both bulky, consumed a lot of power and relied on poor battery technologies. It heralded the introduction of the first ever Mobile Telephone Service in the same year to facilitate automatic call switching, Khosrowpour (2006). Automatic meant that human operators were eliminated. The devices developed by Motorola found immediate use in the military as well as among the richest citizens and businessmen. Better cell phone services were introduced in 1964, and technological developments saw the development of the first portable mobile phone in 1981. Motorola developed the first ever, modern mobile phone in 1983, which was however heavy and relied on poor battery technologies, Hussain Hussain (2007). 2G and 3G Mobile Phones The introduction of Motorolaââ¬â¢s Motorola Dynastic 8000X (first ever modern cell phone model) marked the start of the 1st Generation cell phones, which led into even faster advancements in technology, Partridge (2011). The emergence of GSM Digital Networks refers to SIM card operated phones that were run by digital networks, boosted the popularity of cell phones across the world, after the services were rolled out across the world. Other technologies such as the microchips, integrated circuits and better performing cellular networks resulted into the replacement of the 1st Generation mobile phones, with 2nd Generation phones, that had better battery technologies and weighed less. Analog transmission systems were fast replaced with digital transmission systems, which yielded increased efficiency and speeds of the new generation mobile phones. By the close of 1999, it became possible to download media content (ringtones) from mobile phones, which was quickly followed by an even mo re revolutionary innovation, internet accessibility. This marked the emergence of data packet switching and with it, third Generation phones. Data Packet switching refers to electronic splitting up of data into bundles that can be sent and received as a single unit. Mobile Computing Mobile computing, which arose from Personal Communication Services, refers to the creation of data collection, storage and processing and information management platforms that are free from all phones of temporal or spatial constraints. The removal of these constraints facilitates the ability of users of cell phones and other computing and communication devices to upload, download; access and process information onto the systems, from anywhere. The geographic location; mobile or static state of the users are no longer consequential to mobile phone communication, Hussain Hussain (2007). This revolution has its foundations in personal mobility services and wireless accessibility technologies offered through small terminals (cell phones). These technologies were in turn enabled through the emergence of more efficient data access (connection establishment time), the development of wireless and data access technologies such as CDMA2000 1X, GPRS EDGE, coupled with the emergence of QoS fl ags. CDMA2000 1X, GPRS EDGE and QoS flags are low speed technologies that allowed data to be sent and received between mobile networks using satellites. These have made it possible to network mobile phones and other mobile communication devices, giving them enormous computing power. Importance of Mobile Computing The emergence of mobile computing, which has been made possible by a convergence of a range of mobile phone technologies, has effectively resulted into complete computing power. Mobile phone users can access databases, manipulate data and get information through their mobile phones, without the need of heavy equipment, PCs or even laptops, Partridge (2011). Mobile phones now have enough power to rival conventional computers; complete with multiple data communication protocols. These include wireless, Bluetooth and infrared among many others. In addition, better memory technologies, coupled with the emergence of cloud computing have allowed virtually unlimited data and information storage , which in turn facilitates enormous capacity of mobile phones and other mobile communication devices to have enormous data processing power. Further, and perhaps even more significantly, is the fact that the efficiencies brought about by mobile computing results into large cost savings for organizat ions and individual citizens, Lee (2005). Business Applications The effects of the emergence of mobile phones and the technologies associated with it have been quite simply, revolutionary. In the developing countries, mobile phones are increasingly being in transferring money and as a critical payment system that has facilitated e-commerce transactions. This is not least because credit card and banking facilities are poorly developed, Klemens (2006). Other, more direct business applications include the dispatch and tracking systems for of luggage, vehicles and even animals. In addition, mobile phone technologies and particularly mobile computing has been significantly used in the processing of varied online transactions, enabling travelling professionals to work from their remote locations through applications such as Google Office and Portable Document Applications such as PDF readers etc. It is as well possible for professional teams to work through video conferences and other facilities. Conclusion With increasingly innovation, mobile phone processing and data storage power will rival many modern, conventional computers, resulting into massive gains from the efficiencies that would result from it, Lee (2005). In addition, the growing cost efficiencies and globalization, have and will render more and more business reliant on mobile computing. This is even more so, with the emergence of fourth generation mobile phones, coupled with the emergence of cloud computing, which will give more power to these devices. It is however critical to understand, that these benefits come with equally hurtful effects to the integrity of information, personal data security and the security of online transactions among other. Television and Media Violence - TV Violence and Common Sense
Television Violence and Common Sense It is obvious that children are affected by television. They often pretend to be their favorite character, reenact scenes from movies, and wear clothes featuring their media heroes. As a child, I pretended to be one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles while practicing my fighting skills on invisible bad guys. Although these things are usually a healthy part of growing up, it would be foolish to assume that children are not affected in a negative way by all of the violence that appears on television. American children watch television on an average of twenty-seven hours per week and possibly up to eleven hours a day in larger cities. The American Psychological Association estimates that anâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Sometimes, children can be directly violent as a result of what they see. Some serious acts of violence have occurred as a direct result of the violence that children have seen on television. In one highly publicized incident from the 1980s, thirteen-year-old Juan Valdez confessed to having brutally murdered a friends father. After having kicked, stabbed, beaten, and choked the man with a dog chain, he was asked why he then poured salt in the victims wounds. Oh, I dont know, he replied, I just seen it on TV. (TV Violence 3). In another episode, a nine-year-old girl named Olivia Niemi was sexually assaulted with a discarded beer bottle on an empty beach in San Francisco. The four girls who attacked her said that they were imitating a scene from Born Innocent, a movie that they had seen three days before committing the crime. In the movie, which takes place in a reform school, a group of girls gang up on a new inmate and graphically rape her with the handle of a plumbers helper (Levine 31). I have even noticed how children in my own family have behaved violently with obvious signs of television influence. While my cousin, Ethan, was young, his favorite show was Power Rangers. He pretended to be one constantly. Project Management Organizational Goals
Question: Discuss about the Project Managementfor Organizational Goals. Answer: In order to be successful one needs to know what success means to them. One has to identify their goals and objectives, proper planning is needed to achieve those goals and objectives. Defining objectives is very important, unless one knows what are the goals and objectives it would be difficult to plan how to achieve success. Project management is very complex process. Organizational goals are different from personal goals, they are more formal in nature and have liabilities. Goal identification, planning, forecasting, monitoring and evaluation If project managers execute the plan properly and perform according to set standards it is possible to predict success. (Burke,2013) A project manager can deliver successful projects by following the best practices in project management. To achieve success proper execution of the planning and effective utilization of resources is required. For the effectiveness of a Project a detailed planning and coordination is required. Tasks flow and coordination of the project must be maintained simultaneously.(Kerzner, 2013) Controlling expectations is very important as it can be destructive for the project. The results will be based on the output given. Proper monitoring and evaluation can help in reducing unfeasible expectations. The best practice of my life is I have my goals specified and I work to achieve to achieve those goals. For achieving long term goals there are certain short term goals that are inter related. I have a plan for each of my goals and steps designed to achieve them. References Burke, R. (2013). Project management: planning and control techniques.New Jersey, USA. Kerzner, H. My Biggest Dream Paper Topic Sentence: My biggest dream is to become a stage performer and eventually have my own concerts and world tours someday. Dreams do not Just happen because a dreamer needs to have passion and determination to make dreams come true. My biggest dream is to become a stage performer and eventually have my own concerts and world tours someday. It gives me the feeling of satisfaction and self-worth as I imagine myself being able to share my talent in music to everyone who also loves the world of music. I always keep on dreaming that I can seize the stage of famous concert halls around the world and perform something extraordinary because it fascinates me every time I hear someone having world tours or even those performers who happen to have local concerts in Araneta, Pagcor or Mall of Asia. As for the moment, there is this negative feeling that makes me think I cant make it and I also have my hesitation within myself. I set my goals but then again, I am not that confident that I can attain all of those dreams someday. When Should I Take the ACT for the First Time
When Should I Take the ACT for the First Time SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Are you starting to ask yourself, When should I take the ACT for the first time? The answer to this is a little more complex thanthe question. There are several factors to consider here, so let's review them so you can make an informed decision. First, when do most students take the ACT for the first time? Typical ACT Schedule Many students take the ACT two or three times to try to improve and hit their target scores. They take it for the first time in the fall of junior year, again in the spring, and for the final time in the fall of senior year. This schedule is a solid plan for a lot of students and gives them a good balance between schoolwork, test prep, and college applications. Apart from the pros of this typical schedule, there are a few cons to consider. The first and foremost is that it limits your available test dates. While the ACT is offered 6times throughout the year, in September, October, December, February, April, and June, realistically you'll need time between each test sitting to prep effectively and see score improvements. Taking the ACT in the fall of junior year leaves most studentswith about three test dates to hit their target scores. This might be totally sufficient for some students, but others might benefit from having more chances to take the ACT. Having more test dates protects you if you have a fluke testing day and get sick or can't sleep the night before. Starting earlier so you have more test datesmight also take off some of the pressure, because you won't feel like you're running out of time to achieve your scores. Let's look closer at some reasons why many students step outside this typical test-taking schedule and sign up to take the ACT earlier than the fall of junior year. Why Would You Take the ACT Early? As I touched on briefly above, one major motivation for signing up your first ACT earlier than junior year is simply to give yourself more test dates, and thus more opportunities, to hit your target scores. More Test Dates Let's say you take the ACT in the fall of sophomore year. Your scores are okay, but you think you can make them even better. You have a sense of what you need to study to improve and focus your test prep on those sections or question types. Then you take it again in the spring of sophomore year. If you're still not satisfied, you still have a bunch more test dates to choose from and over a year to keep prepping. Just starting a year earlier could double your opportunities to take the ACT. This could help relieve stress and safeguard you in case anything unexpected comes up and interferes with testing day. Rather than pushing your test dates up against your college application deadlines, you can separate these two pursuits and give yourself more space to breathe and take your time. At the same time, you only want to sign up for and take the ACT if you've put in some test prep first. You want to study for at least 10 hours to familiarize yourself with the format, timing, and instructions of the test. However, in our experience, something like 100 hours of total study time is better to gain expertise and see a real improvement in your approach, understanding, and scores. If you're taking the ACT early, you also should prep early. While taking the real test is valuable experience, you also shouldn't take any real tests with absolutely zero preparation. In rare cases, a huge score change between your first and second test could alert ACT scorers and lead to them withholding or even canceling your scores. So moving your first ACT test date up a year or two should also coincide with moving your prep schedule up. Another reason you might take this approach is if you're "superscoring" the ACT and building up your scores one section at a time. You're Superscoring the ACT Many colleges superscore the ACT, or take your highest section scores across all test dates and recombine them into a new, highest composite score. Not a lot of students know that theycan actually use this policy to their advantage by "superscoring" their tests, just like the colleges. What I mean by superscoring your tests is that you can strategically build up your ACT superscore section by section. On one test date, for example, you could focus a lot of your prep and energy on getting a high Reading score. The next you could focus intensively on English, then on math, and then on science (or focus on two or three sections at a time). As long as your colleges take your highest section scores, and not your highest "sitting" score on one date, then you might get a high ACT score gradually, rather than all at once. Just as I mentioned above, you don't want to treat any test date or section as a "throwaway," because huge fluctuations could be a red flag to colleges or the ACT scorers. For the most part, you can choose which score reports to send to colleges, but some require that you send all your scores across all testing dates and expect you to be honest and comply with this policy. When designing your testing schedule, you want to be aware of your colleges' policy towards standardized tests and countit in as an important factor. If your collegesdon't require all scores, then really you could take the ACT as many times as you want (well, technically you can take it a maximum of 12 times). But I wouldn't suggest going past 6 times, as it could start to be a waste of time and money. Plus if you're finding yourself dissatisfied with your scores over and over, you probably should rethink your test prep strategy and figure out how to make it more productive and effective. Besides being strategic about raising your ACT scores, you might also want to take the ACT earlier just to gain valuable real test experience. Real Test Experience While timing yourself and taking practice tests (and analyzing your results) is a key part of test prep, no practice test can truly mimic the experience of sitting for the official ACT. You might want to sign up for the test just to get this valuable experience, so you know exactly what to bring, when to arrive, and what snacks will boost your energy during the breaks. If you're worried about all the other factors around taking the test, like logistics of getting to your testing center and how exactly to fill out and proofread your bubble sheet, then you might benefit from taking the official ACT. You'll learn how you handle the whole experience and be prepared to improve on any weaknesses for the next time. You might also be pleasantly surprised that you have the content knowledge and skills to do well on the ACT early on, like in freshman or sophomore year. Prepared for anything. You're Prepared Enough to Take the ACT Early While the ACT covers more advanced math than the SAT and has a science section, it does not require very advanced content knowledge that only upperclassmen have. Instead, you might be well prepared with the skills and knowledge in English, Reading, Math, and Science to do well on the ACT in your freshman or sophomore year. You might even surpass the content once you move into junior and senior year, like by taking pre-calculus or calculus, and have to look back and review concepts from past years, like algebra and geometry, that have gotten rusty. Prepping early could be beneficial both for reinforcing class concepts in the context of the ACT and developing the study habits that will help you get good grades in school. You might have more time in freshman and sophomore year, before you're busy with college applications, AP classes, varsity sports, community service, or any of the other activities in which you get involved. If you're prepared with class and have the time, then putting in the effort to prep and take the ACT in 10th or even 9th grade might let you finish taking the ACT early and free up your time in junior and/or senior year. Finally, some students take the ACT even earlier, like in middle school, to qualify for special academic and talent programs. You're Competing in Talent Search Programs While the ACT is mainly a college entrance exam, some students take it earlier to qualify for talent competitions and academic programs. These programs includeBESTS at the University of Iowa, CTY at Johns Hopkins University, JBA at Truman State University, MATS at Northwestern University, and TIP at Duke University. All of these reasons described above are good ones for signing up for your first ACT earlier than the typical junior year test date. As I mentioned, there are also a few reasons to be cautious when answering the question, When should I take my first ACT? Why Might You Not Take the ACT Earlier? I touched on some reasons why you want to be careful about taking the ACT before you're ready and will elaborate on them in some more detail here. The main reason would simply be lack of preparation. While sitting for the real test is really helpful experience, it's not a good idea to go into the ACT with zero studying. Here's a more extreme case. I actually worked with a student who took the ACT just as a trial run. His scores weren't that great, so he studied for several months and then took it again. He did much better. So much better, in fact, that the ACT withheld his scores and made him go through a long process ofappeal that involved gathering letters from teachers and making a dozen phone calls to all different departments. In the end, the ACT never released his scores. This situation is very rare, but it can happen if the ACT sees a huge jump or senses inconsistencies in your test scores. Especially with recent security breaches around the ACT and SAT, these organizations carefully monitor any hint of foulplay. The moral of this story is that you don't want to take the ACT with absolutely no preparation just to see what it's like, becausethis could not only look strange to ACT, Inc, but could also just be a wasted opportunity to test. The other consideration is that some colleges want you to send all your scores from all test sittings. I would say taking the ACT up to 6 times is fair game, but any more than that might start to send the message that you're not putting in the effort to prep and have a hard time achieving your scores. To sum up, preparation is the name of the game with the ACT, so you want to find a balance between test prep and leaving yourself enough test dates to hit your target scores, line up the test with school, and design a productive schedule for you. Ask yourself these questions. Questions to Ask Yourself Along with asking, when should I take the ACT for the first time, you can ask yourself these key questions: Have I done some test prep? If you answer yes, then you can likely go ahead and register for the ACT. If no, then make some time to study before signing up. Even 10 hours of prep can make a big difference in familiarizing yourselfwith the test. What are my target scores? If you have defined your target scores, take a practice test and see how close you are to achieving them. If you are scoring much lower than your goals, then you might want to prep some more before signing up for your first ACT. How many test dates do I think I need to achieve my target scores? If you think you need more than two or three test dates to reach your target scores, or feel uneasy aboutthe idea of testing in the fall of senior year, then you probably should sign up to take the ACT as a sophomore. What are my colleges' policies regarding superscoring and sending score reports? If your colleges superscore your results, then this might be part of your testing strategy, as described above. If they want you to send all your score reports, then you might be more cautious in your approach. How can I fit test prep into my current and future schedule? If you are planning to take three AP courses junior year or are joining a varsity sports team, you might consider doing Future You a favor and prepping earlier rather than later, when you have more time and flexibility in your schedule. Once you've answered these questions, you should have a clearer sense of what prep and testing schedule work best for you. Rather than simply following the typical schedule, you should make sure you make a plan that works best with your schedule, classes, and personal goals. What's Next? Detailed research proposal-Role of social media on the 2011 london Essay
Detailed research proposal-Role of social media on the 2011 london riots - Essay Example In recent years, since the dawn of the Arab Spring, it has also become a means of informing the public about political issues and of rallying the public towards collective action. This was very much apparent in 2011 when various riots and demonstrations were organized, spurred on, and won with the primary help of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The so-called Facebook Revolution was seen in Egypt when various demonstrations against the ruling government were staged by the general population with the help of Facebook. This was also seen in London in 2011 from August 6-11 when various events led to various demonstrations in the British capital. During the riots and demonstrations, many of those participating did not cover their faces, even posing for pictures while they made off with stolen goods and posting them in the social networking sites (BBC, 2011). There are different theories which would help explain the impact of the social media on the 2011 London riots. On e of these theories includes the social movement theory which indicates a useful foundation in understanding the movement of individuals with the end goal of managing collective actions and problems relating to individual movement participation (Dewey, et.al., 2012). This theory presents a context upon which the role of the social media can be further understood. Political struggles can manifest in different incarnations, including protest, collective action and contention (Tilly, 2011). Protests express shared ideals which are often observed in street politics. For collective action, this occurs where a specific group shares interests and acts based on such interests. Finally, contention includes making claims with parties also making demands affecting collective interests. The social movement theory argues that communities having strong network ties are more likely to go through collective actions as compared with those having weak ties. Strong social ties in networks often enable initial calls for participation in social movements, and later they ease the way towards participation as they decrease issues in mobilization. McAdam and Paulsen (1993) also argue that strong social ties help recruit individuals, as well as serve as effective communication tools in spreading messages for social movements across networks. To a large extent, just as the social media was used to draw in more participants, the social media also became a tool by which these rioters were apprehended for their illegal actions. The utility of the social media worked both ways (Denef, et.al., 2013). Cases of looting and vandalism were actually resolved by the police by looking through Flickr and Facebook, looking through galleries of pictures in order to identify perpetrators. Most of the riots were also organized and triggered through Twitter. At some point, Twitter was described as a tool for promoting gang violence (Williams, 2011). However, evidence also indicates that the riots were i nspired by postings based on daily news from the media (Williams, 2011). Based on these circumstances, it would be logical to conclude that the social media has had a major role in the outcome of the 2011 London riots. The impact here refers to how the social media has helped in spreading word-of-mouth, impacting on the largest number of

Subject Specialism Reflection Essay Example for Free
Subject Specialism Reflection Essay I have a degree in Computer Networking and Communication. Since then I have been continually developing my subject knowledge via various mediums. I have been teaching my subject specialism for a number of years, and in that time I have gained tremendous amount of knowledge that has helped me to deliver more confidently to make the teaching and learning experience more enjoyable for me as a tutor and for the learners. The first point to mention here is the teaching observations they have helped me to plan and deliver my sessions according to the national standards. This has enabled me to demonstrate my knowledge of the subject area. I also attended one day course on Usability and accessibility on 7th February 2007 at The McDonald St Paul Hotel. The part that interested more was to learn and understand about the various challenges disable people face when using websites. Details of course in appendix. â⬠¢ Disability Discrimination Act and legal obligations â⬠¢ Overview of disabilities and assistive technologies â⬠¢ Overview of standards and guidelines â⬠¢ How to incorporate accessibility into an organisation â⬠¢ Benefits of accessible websites This led me to investigate this issues further. The following website was quite useful: http://www.tiresias.org/ , it provides lots of guidance on how ICT can be made accessible for specialist use. I need to learn more regarding latest software and advance courses. I also need to deliver to more advance level of learners. An opportunity has arisen for me to develop my skills to do this. I shall be attending an advanced Excel course in a couple of weeks time organised Crown Enterprise and Training. I feel that in some areas of ICT I already have the requisite skills so it is important that I deliver higher end IT courses which would be more in line with my level of knowledge and skills. Otherwise my experience will only be of teaching at lower level of IT courses and very little experience of teaching higher level and that will not help my long term plans of teaching higher-level courses. I was actually a member of the British Computer Society, http://www.bcs.org/ , for a period of time, though this is no longer the case I do however continue to access their website regularly to update my knowledge on the latest developments in the computer industry as it relates particularly to using technology for learning and for professional development. I have developed myself academically and professionally through the first year of the PGCE course. I need to build on this foundation in the second year and extend both my pedagogic and professional skills. One of the key components that should help to do this would be the ICT module taught on the course. From the content of the module I look forward to learning how to design a web page. This should enhance my capacity in delivering my specialist subject area of IT by exploring the idea of using a web page to deliver part of my course/courses. I shall explore various websites for developing web pages and undertake any training that might become available. I also intend to develop my knowledge about learning to use Apple Mac in the first instance and then hopefully to apply this knowledge in order to teach Graphic Design. This is quite a challenging target and I would need to tap into all the available resources to achieve this. I need to identify some interactive websites and online learning materials that would allow me to enhance my professional and pedagogical capacities further. The important lesson for me to learn is as suggested by Hughes and Kennewell (2007, p.100) is to approach ICT so that ââ¬Å" what becomes increasingly important is not so much what you know about a topic, but your willingness to learn new skills, to be open to advice and not to hide your ignorance of relevant knowledge. Regular reading of educational, professional and hobby literature in ICT will be important throughout your teaching careers, as well as attending local, regional and national conferences.â⬠References British Computer Society, 2008. Is Abortion Rare And Safe - 1063 Words
Abortion The title of the scholarly journal article I read is called Making Abortion rare and safe. Abortion is the process where you end pregnancy before the fetus is born, which therefore deceases the fetus. This article is important because this subject has become very prevalent worldwide. Abortion is developing a high increase in numerous of countries, therefore there needs to be a safer abortion awareness or to even make it infrequent in non-serious cases. The author, Duff Gillespie, started of this article by explaining to the audience how important and severe abortion is to women. Gillespie wrote that in the United States, there is a serious debate on womenââ¬â¢s right to control their bodies against letting a healthy fetus live. This shouldnââ¬â¢t be a serious case because all women do have the right to control their bodies, but when it comes to a fetus, they have to think twice. Many women are tremendously having medical issues while pregnant, and in that case they hav e no absolute control on their bodies so they will need to officially proceed with an abortion. But On the other hand, other women are just concerned about body beauty and how it would risk a fetusââ¬â¢s life, like gaining a couple of extra body fat. So I feel that if this debate is recognized, medical or political researchers would have to consider it intensely. The increase in abortion is developing a world foreign assistance. The Open Boat By Stephen Crane - 1197 Words
Throughout time, many literature works of art have shown the common theme of man with the mindset that he is the superior being in control. Around the 1830s, literature took a turn from the romantic view of the world to a more natural take of the universe. One of the better portrayals of this naturalistic view is Stephen Craneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Open Boatâ⬠in which the short story exhibits the lives of four men cast out at sea after their steamer, the Commodore, sank and they were then forced to take refuge in a life boat. This story follows the men through the focalizing viewpoint of the correspondent and descriptively as well as effectively portrays his psychologically changing viewpoints of the ocean and their take on nature as a whole. This short story is a classic representation of naturalism with the extensive use of literary tools such as personification, metaphors, and similes to convey the message that nature is indifferent to mankind and exhibits the steady-changing viewpoint of the correspondent as the story progresses. While reading this quite descriptive short story, it was incredibly easy to find many literary tools used to present the naturalistic setting in which these four men were trapped and how throughout the story their perception of nature changes. Initially the correspondent uses heavy personification to describe the boat in which the four are riding and the sea on which they struggle to conquer. ââ¬Å"Many a man ought to have a bathtub larger than the boar whichShow MoreRelatedThe Open Boat By Stephen Crane1076 Words à |à 5 PagesThe Open Boat Analysis The Open Boat is a wildly creative text. On the 2nd of November, year 2006, an almost-tragic event happened in the roads of Kalipayan, here in Tacloban City. I was in the 6th grade at the time and it was All Soulsââ¬â¢ Day. My relatives and I went to the cemetery to visit the grave of my late grandfather, who passed away in June of the same year. We will write a custom essay sample on A Tragedy Averted or any similar topic only for you Order Now We arrived there in the late afternoon. After offering prayers for the eternal repose of my grandfather, as well as exchanging stories with my cousins and aunts, my mom decided it was time to go home. It was already getting late, the time indicating it was almost midnight. We waited for several minutes for a jeepney to come and when we were able to get oneâ⬠¦ The vehicle was moving at moderate speed and everything was going well. My mom was busy conversing with my aunt about important matters when the jeepney came to a halt, letting a passenger off near the bend on the road. All of a sudden; a man, out of nowhere, snatched my momââ¬â¢s bag and immediately jumped off the vehicle. It seemed like time was stopped and everyone was left in a trance. Not wasting any more precious time, I jumped off the vehicle and chased the snatcher ââ¬â who was carrying a small knife ââ¬â until I came to a dead end. I got a little frightened for the path where the snatcher ran off to was narrow and looked like a ledge and one small step would have led me drenched in the water. I ran back to the main road and finding relief in the presence of light posts, I jogged to a walk and tried to catch my breath. Going back to the jeepney where my mom, sister and aunt were waiting ââ¬â all the while anxious about my sudden departure ââ¬â I found men and bystanders gathering around my momââ¬â¢s bag. Turns out, the snatcher dropped the bag and only stole my momââ¬â¢s mobile phone and didnââ¬â¢t touch the other paraphernalia in the bag. Thankfully, my mom was pretty clever in keeping our passports and other essential things in a plain-looking plastic bag. The snatcher probably thought it was just trash and decided to discard it. We went back to the jeepney and arrived safely in our house. My sister was in a state of shock while my mom was truly grateful for the essentials that were left unharmed. I was mainly disappointed that I wasnââ¬â¢t able to catch the criminal but nevertheless thankful that I was given enough courage by God to chase the snatcher and got out of that situation without facing any threat or danger. Question: Discuss about the Leadership Skills of Golden Village Multiplex. Answer: Introduction The word leadership has a variety of images. One can be a political leader, school leader, business leader and many more. A leader helps others to choose the right path and take the right decision (Batool 2013). They set a vision and a new direction, influence others to follow their direction and create something that is new and original. A transformational leader can change many lives and earn appreciation from others (Yukl 2012). The report throws light on the qualities a successful leader should have along with the leadership theories including followers, organizational culture and change management. A good leader requires certain number of skills which help them interact positively with their followers. One needs to communicate succinctly and clearly with his/her followers to explain the goals of the organization (Sethuraman and Suresh 2014). The report highlights the leadership skills of the duty manager of Golden Village Multiplex Private Ltd, Yap Chui Chin and how she manages her work daily. She has been leading the cinema chain for more than twenty five years. In addition to this, the report contains few leadership qualities that would help someone gain knowledge on how to become a successful leader. Discussion Becoming a good and effective leader is not an easy thing. It is a time taking process. One needs to learn a lot and practice the leadership qualities until and unless he/she becomes a part of it. An effective leader must have certain qualities (McCleskey 2014). Those are discussed here. Firstly, a leader must be able to succinctly and clearly communicate his/her ideas and opinions among the followers. He/she should always be available to discuss about issues and problems with his/her followers. Secondly, a leader should constantly motivate and inspire his/her followers in order to encourage passion and productivity (Showry and Manasa 2014). Thirdly, a leader single handedly cannot achieve the goals of an organization. Constant help and support from the members is necessary. Fourthly, a leader has loads of responsibilities towards his/her followers. If a leader is ineffective, then he/she may have a chance of losing respect from the members. Therefore, a leader must not have commitment issues and be responsible towards the members (Komives and Wagner 2016). Observation Modern day business professionals and celebrities are aware of the fact that in order to achieve their goals, they must learn and adopt certain leadership skills and qualities. Such an inspirational leader is Yap Chui Chin, who changed millions of lives and encouraged many (Choi et al., 2016). Chin has been leading the Golden Village Multiplex Private Limited television and her career spanned more than 25 years. Being the duty manager of the company, she leads her team with full confidence (Conger and Kanungo 2017). The success and growth of any organization depends on how themanagement team is led. In order to become a successful duty manager, on needs to be confident and responsible towards his/her employees. He/she must have certain leadership qualities in order to maintain and provide overall safety measures at the premises. Chin, being the duty manager of the Golden Village Multiplex, shares her leadership qualities and how she manages her work (Harris et al. 2013). Interview Being a leader, Chin never lost his sight of humanity. In her opinion, most people can achieve bigger if they have determination and keep trying. On being interviewed, the leader answered each and every question in full details and explained every portion. The interview was strongly based with questions on leadership skills and decision making, which gave satisfactory results. Her ideas and opinions gave a brief explanation of her leadership style and skills (Shamir, House and Arthur 2012). On being asked about the leadership qualities a duty manager requires in order to succeed, she explained it very clearly. For becoming a successful manager an individual must follow these four principles. Firstly, one must know what he/she is doing and what they aim for, as identifying ones aim is very necessary. At times, an individual cannot decide what they aim for and what their goals are. This results in losing focus. Secondly, many a times, I have seen people having potential cannot make it on the long run. This is because of lack of concentration and focus. People have to focus on the thing which they are doing. Thirdly, it is important to be sincere with your work, values and beliefs. One should not try to be someone which he/she is actually not. Just be your own self, that is, genuine and not fake, to impress others. You will surely succeed. Fourthly, on should have that humanity in him/her self. No matter how successful or rich a person becomes. He/she must be humble and affectionate towards others. This will help in creating a long lasting impact on his/her followers minds. When the interviewee was asked how a leader should treat his/her employees or subordinates, her reply gave useful insights. According to her, A leaders success depends on how he/she is treating his/her subordinates. It should not be taken lightly as it acts as a powerful energizer that can take anybody to something greater and huge. One should behave properly with his/her subordinates, conducting timely ceremonies and promotions which would energize the employees to work better. A leader must be responsible towards his/her employees and with constant motivation and encouragement; a person can achieve huge success. Further she added, One should believe in his/her own self. There are times when people summon great courage and take big decisions which others may oppose. One has to be a risk taker if he/she wants to achieve something greater. He/she has to believe in the path they are undertaking. Like stocks, one should choose the best and the right path for themselves. One has to be authentic and true and believe in them that the decision they took is going to work. Being a celebrity, I think that all celebrities must love what they do. If a person dreams small, then he/she may achieve something less than there expectation and for many that is enough. But if someone wants to achieve something bigger with long lasting and widespread impact, he/she needs to dream bigger and take bold steps. When the interviewee was asked about the responsibilities a leader or a duty manager should bear, her answer gave some important information. In her opinion, Not everyone can shape his/her destiny. When a person rises to the position of authority, he/she has loads of responsibilities. He/she has to keep an eye on a daily basis how the employees of the company are working, how the company is running, the reason of profits and losses. He/she must know where to run and where to stop by not leaving the employees behind. A leader must be honest and authentic. He/she must not hide things from any of the external public as well as internal public. This helps in gaining trust from both the sides. He/she should understand the level of transparency and vulnerability as it results in humility and truthfulness. According to Chin, A leader must be trustworthy and be able to gain trust from his/her supporters. An open mind and a clear heart are very necessary in becoming a successful leader. Being honest and trustworthy would help him/her gain faith from the employees. Last but not the least; a leader must have a creative mind and be flexible in nature. Flexibility skills of a leader help him/her to accept whatever changes required at any point of time. Moreover, he/she must always be open to receive feedbacks and suggestions from his/her followers. On being asked about the relation between an organizational leader and his/her employees, she gave such a wonderful reply. Chin said, Transformational leaders must give their subordinates the opportunity to solve problems which arises. This will help them become creative and stimulate innovative ideas. Moreover, the employees will have the courage to voice their opinion and share their views without the fear of being punished or scold. An employee will get the opportunity to share his/her problems, if any. This will help the leader to understand their issues and he/she should mentor them by offering career counseling individually. She further adds, As a business leader, ones quest should just not only be about winning and making money. It should always be about building a great and enduring company, with good and cooperative employees. Employees attitude play a vital role in the success of any company. A leader must be able to maintain a balance between social conscience and the companys profit. Moreover, a leader should be influential and have the ability to influence others. He/she must have a good charismatic attitude and personality which would influence the employees to follow their leaders path. Being a leader, one must be able to earn the respect and trust and build confidence of his/her subordinates by motivating them each and every time. A good leader must be enthusiastic and positive which will help him/her to motivate the subordinates. He/she must give the employees the opportunity to dream and achieve bigger because employees play a major role in the companys success. When Chin was asked to comment on how hiring right people can reflect the success of any organization, she said, Hiring right employees is like choosing the right film to work on. I always believe in hiring the right individual as they are responsible for the organizations success. If any individual lacks dedication and confidence, the company will suffer great consequences. Therefore, according to Chin, A leader must have an eye for the right people. He/she must choose the members wisely, as the people serving for the company is the heart of the organization. Furthermore, he added, A leader should also know the importance of partnerships. I believe finding a right partner for the company can help in creating brand awareness and in turn help in achieving the companys goals and motives. In Chins opinion, employees of the organization are the pillars of any business. Hiring right employees can take any company to a higher level. Just like choosing right actor leads to the films success, right selection of employees proves beneficial for the company. Employees must be treated nicely, through constant motivation and support. If any miscommunication occurs between an organizational leader and an employee regarding anything, it is the duty of the leader to clarify the issue. At times, I listen to my employees ideas and views which give me some informative insights. According to me, it doesnt make a leader small; rather it helps in motivating the employee to work better. On being asked about the basic skills and qualities a duty manager should have, she gave a brief reply about the important working skills of an individual.
