Lean Manufacturing - Research Paper Example In the previous decade, thorough methodologies have been utilized to wipe out inconsequential consumptions in assembling. This pattern has gotten worldwide in scale confirm by its reception in British assembling from Japan’s vehicle industry. The standards of lean spotlights on limiting costs actuated from excess errands while guiding the business to rehearses that increases the value of the firm. It is obviously noteworthy that the framework is surely known by the senior administration who true to form must have an unmistakable objective. Lean assembling rehearses are favored in various assembling activities over conventional large scale manufacturing strategies (Doolen and Hacker 2005). Conflicts on lean practices emerged as scientists contended that these practices are not as serious and relevant to other operational situations, similar to those that organize contemplations, for example, adaptability of volume, initiative in innovation, speed in market and improvement of new items.. These specialists likewise distinguished elective practices on activity (for example techniques that continue supplemental limit in the general gracefully chain and has been seen to be beneficial). This, nonetheless, is in direct logical inconsistency with the waste decrease theory of lean practices.

Odysseus and Ulysses - Literature Essay Samples

Modern renditions of classics are notorious for misrepresenting the cherished old works they try to depict, but when they are successful they add modern twists and embellishments while still maintaining the timeless message. In O Brother, Where Art Thou? the Coen brothers honor Homer’s epic, the Odyssey, with an insightful adaptation. The directors artistically implant messages about honor and trust using symbolism and positioning in ways that mirror the format of the epic and create a worthwhile viewing experience for students trying to supplement their education. Odysseus remains a timeless hero in society not only because of his journeys, but also his larger than life persona and the respect he commands from everyone he meets. Ulysses adopts this mindset in his travels, refusing to be defined as a person based on the situation he is in at any given moment. The symbolism frequent in O Brother, Where Art Thou? adds depth to Ulysses by emphasizing how his care about appearances affects his experiences and decisions. After escaping from jail, Ulysses, Pete, and Delmar are hungry, tired, and have no way of getting to the treasure. Ulysses stops at a store for a car part and some hair pomade, but refuses to accept any brand other then his own, claiming, â€Å"I don’t want Fop, goddamn it! I’m a Dapper Dan man!† This refusal to settle for what Ulysses views as a lesser substitute is reminiscent of Odysseus’ determination to reach Ithaca, though on a much more limited scale. Ulysses believes that accepting anything less t han what he wants will be a concession of weakness and will demote him to a less honorable status. Odysseus behaves the same way throughout his journey. Calypso expresses her strong desire to keep him on her island indefinitely. While Odysseus does not view this as an entirely unpleasant situation, he knows that his true wish is to finally reach Ithaca and his wife, and therefore implores Calypso to let him leave. Although honor is extremely important to both men, they are willing to admit slight defeats at the chance of a greater opportunity to redeem themselves. In a final, desperate attempt to win back Penny, Ulysses and his men dress up as a band of old men, complete with beards. Ulysses promises that he’s â€Å"just gotta get close enough to talk to her.† A bedraggled old man does not match the type of appearance Ulysses traditionally likes to maintain, but he sees the chance it gives him to reunite with Penny and sacrifices the less important aspects of his natur e in order to achieve his goals. Odysseus exhibits the same ability to make sacrifices when he spends years at his home in Ithaca, enduring harsh, humiliating treatment from the suitors. Although it pained him to undergo that type of disrespect in his own home, he knew that in order to succeed in his plan he would need to bide his time until he was ready to defeat the suitors. The symbolism evident in the old man disguises represents the patience and sacrifices the men make towards a greater long-term goal. Honor is a major driving force for the adventures of these men, but they still realize when a greater cause is worth a meager sacrifice. Other sacrifices are made on such adventures when a great amount of trust is required to succeed in the goals of the group. The Coen brothers use subtle positioning throughout the film adaptation to signify who the men trust to lead them throughout their struggles. At the start of their travels, an order needs to be established to prevent conflicts. This issue is addressed quickly, when Pete asks Ulysses, â€Å"Who elected you leader of this outfit?† No formal leader is established at this point, but it soon becomes clear whom the men look to for guidance. Ulysses gains their trust quickly, and this is expressed not only through actions but also through the subtle ways Ulysses fulfills common leadership roles. When the men steal a car in order to seek the treasure, Ulysses is the driver. This subtle cue incorporated by the Coen brothers subconsciously places Ulysses in a leadership role. This reflects Odysseus’ position in relation to his crew. Both men are looked to fo r the decisions of the groups as a whole, and both use this power to help their men escape dangerous situations. Ulysses used his guidance abilities to help his men out of the burning barn at the Hogwallop’s when they were â€Å"in a tight spot,† just as Odysseus uses his wit to devise a plan to escape from Polythemus’ cave. Ulysseus is placed in the center again as the lead singer for the Soggy Bottom Boys’ hit song, â€Å"Man of Constant Sorrow.† He is clearly a leader in this position, and becomes the face of their fame. Odysseus mirrors this role in his tale, as well. As leader of his crew, Odysseus is the name people wonder about when they talk about how long it has been since their return. Odysseus represents many men, but is the only one remembered for their journey, just as the lead singer so often steals the spotlight from the entirety of a band. Students reading the Odyssey would do very well to supplement their reading with this modern adaptation of the Greek classic. While still possessing artistic differences and interpretations in the plot, the film does exceptionally well portraying Ulysses as a hero with inner conflict regarding whether to protect his crew or further his personal goals. Odysseus faces these crossroads frequently in the Odyssey, the classic example being the choice he faces on Circe’s island. Upon discovering that Circe had turned his men into pigs, Odysseus must choose to brave the possible danger that the witch brings, or to leave his men there and flee towards Ithaca. He remains loyal to his men and helps liberate them, forming a valuable connection with Circe along the way. The film adaptation excels at demonstrating this conflict of character Ulysses frequently suffers from, although Ulysses, like Odysseus, manages to come through in truly desperate times. When the men stumble upon a KKK gat hering Ulysses immediately spots Tommy, their old accompanist, lined up for a lynching. He does not hesitate in his decision when Pete whispers, â€Å"We got to save him.† Infiltrating a KKK meeting is a potentially life threating risk for Ulysses to undertake, but his loyalty to his companions drives him, like Odysseus, to taking that chance. The film adaptation, like the book, helps portray the lengths to which the main characters will go to where they are headed, and scenes like this, which offer character change, are crucial to the development of the story and necessary to show in class. The crew can also hinder Odysseus, which adds to the dynamic he maintains with his companions. When the crew is gifted with wind to aid them on the trip back home to Ithaca, the crew soon grows restless and mutinous and decides to investigate the bag with the wind in it. The wind comes roaring out, and their closest chance to reaching Ithaca vanishes in front of them. Ulysses experiences similar setbacks as a result of his men. After the men escape from prison they try to jump on a train for fast passage to the treasure. Two of them get up, but one trips in the attempted jump and drags all three of them off of the train. The incompetence of the crew in this situation is necessary to developing an understanding of the relationship between Ulysses and his men. A huge part of understanding the Odyssey is appreciating how much aid Odysseus receives from companions, and realizing his hesitation to trust many. Many scenes in O Brother, Where Art Thou? expand on this relationship and display it in more distinct terms than may have been offered in the Odyssey, creating an ideal work to be offered to students for enhanced learning. Homer’s The Odyssey remains so popular to this day in part because of its flexibility to adaptation within many different environments, as masterfully demonstrated by the Coen Brothers in O Brother, Where Art Thou? Both the positive and negative aspects of the relationships and characters developed in the film create lasting impressions about the characters that would prove more difficult to express solely through the book.

Essay on Mobile Phone Innovation

Essay on Mobile Phone Innovation Background and History Mobile phones technology is founded on the radio technology developed in the 1940, which formed the foundation for the innovations in police vehicles and cabs, where two way radios allowed two way communications. The earliest mobile phone emerge in 1946, despite the fact that it was both bulky, consumed a lot of power and relied on poor battery technologies. It heralded the introduction of the first ever Mobile Telephone Service in the same year to facilitate automatic call switching, Khosrowpour (2006). Automatic meant that human operators were eliminated. The devices developed by Motorola found immediate use in the military as well as among the richest citizens and businessmen. Better cell phone services were introduced in 1964, and technological developments saw the development of the first portable mobile phone in 1981. Motorola developed the first ever, modern mobile phone in 1983, which was however heavy and relied on poor battery technologies, Hussain Hussain (2007). 2G and 3G Mobile Phones The introduction of Motorola’s Motorola Dynastic 8000X (first ever modern cell phone model) marked the start of the 1st Generation cell phones, which led into even faster advancements in technology, Partridge (2011). The emergence of GSM Digital Networks refers to SIM card operated phones that were run by digital networks, boosted the popularity of cell phones across the world, after the services were rolled out across the world. Other technologies such as the microchips, integrated circuits and better performing cellular networks resulted into the replacement of the 1st Generation mobile phones, with 2nd Generation phones, that had better battery technologies and weighed less. Analog transmission systems were fast replaced with digital transmission systems, which yielded increased efficiency and speeds of the new generation mobile phones. By the close of 1999, it became possible to download media content (ringtones) from mobile phones, which was quickly followed by an even mo re revolutionary innovation, internet accessibility. This marked the emergence of data packet switching and with it, third Generation phones. Data Packet switching refers to electronic splitting up of data into bundles that can be sent and received as a single unit. Mobile Computing Mobile computing, which arose from Personal Communication Services, refers to the creation of data collection, storage and processing and information management platforms that are free from all phones of temporal or spatial constraints. The removal of these constraints facilitates the ability of users of cell phones and other computing and communication devices to upload, download; access and process information onto the systems, from anywhere. The geographic location; mobile or static state of the users are no longer consequential to mobile phone communication, Hussain Hussain (2007). This revolution has its foundations in personal mobility services and wireless accessibility technologies offered through small terminals (cell phones). These technologies were in turn enabled through the emergence of more efficient data access (connection establishment time), the development of wireless and data access technologies such as CDMA2000 1X, GPRS EDGE, coupled with the emergence of QoS fl ags. CDMA2000 1X, GPRS EDGE and QoS flags are low speed technologies that allowed data to be sent and received between mobile networks using satellites. These have made it possible to network mobile phones and other mobile communication devices, giving them enormous computing power. Importance of Mobile Computing The emergence of mobile computing, which has been made possible by a convergence of a range of mobile phone technologies, has effectively resulted into complete computing power. Mobile phone users can access databases, manipulate data and get information through their mobile phones, without the need of heavy equipment, PCs or even laptops, Partridge (2011). Mobile phones now have enough power to rival conventional computers; complete with multiple data communication protocols. These include wireless, Bluetooth and infrared among many others. In addition, better memory technologies, coupled with the emergence of cloud computing have allowed virtually unlimited data and information storage , which in turn facilitates enormous capacity of mobile phones and other mobile communication devices to have enormous data processing power. Further, and perhaps even more significantly, is the fact that the efficiencies brought about by mobile computing results into large cost savings for organizat ions and individual citizens, Lee (2005). Business Applications The effects of the emergence of mobile phones and the technologies associated with it have been quite simply, revolutionary. In the developing countries, mobile phones are increasingly being in transferring money and as a critical payment system that has facilitated e-commerce transactions. This is not least because credit card and banking facilities are poorly developed, Klemens (2006). Other, more direct business applications include the dispatch and tracking systems for of luggage, vehicles and even animals. In addition, mobile phone technologies and particularly mobile computing has been significantly used in the processing of varied online transactions, enabling travelling professionals to work from their remote locations through applications such as Google Office and Portable Document Applications such as PDF readers etc. It is as well possible for professional teams to work through video conferences and other facilities. Conclusion With increasingly innovation, mobile phone processing and data storage power will rival many modern, conventional computers, resulting into massive gains from the efficiencies that would result from it, Lee (2005). In addition, the growing cost efficiencies and globalization, have and will render more and more business reliant on mobile computing. This is even more so, with the emergence of fourth generation mobile phones, coupled with the emergence of cloud computing, which will give more power to these devices. It is however critical to understand, that these benefits come with equally hurtful effects to the integrity of information, personal data security and the security of online transactions among other. Television and Media Violence - TV Violence and Common Sense

Television Violence and Common Sense It is obvious that children are affected by television. They often pretend to be their favorite character, reenact scenes from movies, and wear clothes featuring their media heroes. As a child, I pretended to be one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles while practicing my fighting skills on invisible bad guys. Although these things are usually a healthy part of growing up, it would be foolish to assume that children are not affected in a negative way by all of the violence that appears on television. American children watch television on an average of twenty-seven hours per week and possibly up to eleven hours a day in larger cities. The American Psychological Association estimates that an†¦show more content†¦Sometimes, children can be directly violent as a result of what they see. Some serious acts of violence have occurred as a direct result of the violence that children have seen on television. In one highly publicized incident from the 1980s, thirteen-year-old Juan Valdez confessed to having brutally murdered a friends father. After having kicked, stabbed, beaten, and choked the man with a dog chain, he was asked why he then poured salt in the victims wounds. Oh, I dont know, he replied, I just seen it on TV. (TV Violence 3). In another episode, a nine-year-old girl named Olivia Niemi was sexually assaulted with a discarded beer bottle on an empty beach in San Francisco. The four girls who attacked her said that they were imitating a scene from Born Innocent, a movie that they had seen three days before committing the crime. In the movie, which takes place in a reform school, a group of girls gang up on a new inmate and graphically rape her with the handle of a plumbers helper (Levine 31). I have even noticed how children in my own family have behaved violently with obvious signs of television influence. While my cousin, Ethan, was young, his favorite show was Power Rangers.
